Trifecta Post (aka one big motha fucker)
Sup, Im WarHammer. Some other names Ive gone by are, CaptainPants, Rigg, Acell, Pit, Vice, etc.
So who the hell am I? I am a fine arts student, struggling to get into the game design world. Hoping to take over Blizzard or to replace Akihiko Yoshida of Square Enix. Video games have been cocaine since my first game 7 years ago. I have a passion for character and story design, and cry myself to sleep wishing to be able to create my own awesome sauce video game one day (be it a mmorpg or a ps3 game). As a internet persona, I can be crude and brutally honest. For I tend to be a hypocrite and take up the idea that, its the internet and I can say watever I want (despite how much I hate on people who do that). But this isnt about me. Its about me educationally bashing on the behaviors of nerds in mass multiplayer online role playing games (mmorpgs). As apart of being a video game designer, I believe its my job to infiltrate the minds of my addicted victims, to learn what makes them tick and how to make my games even more addictive. I have also liked to observe the different players in mmorpgs, I like to observe the way players interact with each other. How some players will take on another persona online, how some guys will pretend to be G.I.R.Ls (guy in real life) for in game benefits, or why girls tend to hide behind a male character. In a way it is like people watching without the awkwardness of staring. You can go as far as still seeing racism, stereotyping, and cliques in the online world. There are still the “preps” (girls or guys who “cam whore” themselves), the nerds (serious gamers who claim superiority in their player versus player (pvp) skills), the loners (like me, those who stay quiet and mind their own business and just play the damn game!), etc. I see some mmorpgs transform from a game into a whole new world for people to live, lie and even love (I have played a game where people tend to focus more on “leveling” their relationships than actually playing their characters).I have been on both the player side, and the admin side and often notice various conflicts. This leads me to try to think, how can I create a game that has most of the right things that players like without making it too easy (mind you I cant speak for customer support, no fuck that). While I find poking into the way people act in an online environment interesting. I still have to say that my true interest is in the game itself. What makes one game more appealing to one group of people than another? Or why certain genres of games make better mmorpgs? Do gamers like games with more storyline or is it just spam text to them? There is a little competition between Asian games and Western games. Japan is often on the top of the list in anything electronic, but nowadays the Western world has caught on to this rising market in video games and is becoming heavy competition to the Asian designers. Though, the two worlds have yet to really merge in any one game (discounting Aion since its still in beta form), there seems to be evidence that easterners and westerners don’t have much in common when it comes to games. Japan has Final Fantasy, Kingdom Hearts, and Mario, all very story based games. While in the west corner there is Call of duty, Halo, Crysis, all of which are more gritty and “real”. Of course there are exceptions but nonetheless there is an evident gap between styles. Even in mmorpgs there are the Asian “grind fests” and the Westeners’ need for a purpose to kill 10 Furbolgs. I see various other blogs that discuss things I want to talk about, but some seem to never have enough details or maybe just not enough balls to really say something. Everyone can be too sensitive on the Internet and constantly watch what they say, trying to go neither A or B. But Im here to just fuck things up. My aim is pretty much to write something informative while still be over all amusing (every body loves pee pee jokes) because thats just how I do.. But if people have no clue wtf Im saying then at least they get a couple of shits and giggles from this ( laugh damnit!). And maybe as I violate the world of mmorpgs I might find that there actualy is a "psychology" to video games or I might just find that theyre just complete brain rapes. SO, video games. The hiv of humanity? I would sometimes like to think so (coughfuckingtrollscough). Honestly, the online world has two faces. Its a god send and its the devils cake. It will fuck you in the ass and then bake you a cake (kinda like that sour patch kids commercial). I have seen flamers have a feast upon my friends, I have had my caps lock on auto drive, I have seen hours of just nonstop ‘STFU NOOB’ being thrown around and sometimes I will take a step back after an epik 3 hour long flame war, and think to myself ‘why the hell am I wasting my time with this?’ (answering this question with a well deserved facepalm). However I cant say that I’ve never experienced a pleasent time online. I have met a nice group of friends who have been with me for several years now, but this is exactly what John Funk means when he wrote Virtual Worlds and MMORPGS: The Best and Worst of Humanity. John Funk is a gamer and a reviewer, who is mostly seen on either The Escapist (known for the critic god “Zero Puncuation” Yahtzee Croshaw) or WarCry Net. Both sites are heavily into gaming and expand from MMORPGS to console games. His blogs consist of various game reviews and sometimes poking deeper into the mechanics or appeal of the game and every once in a while he takes a step back and looks at the bigger picture. He discusses current events in the gaming world like UN Group Urges Japan to Ban Explicit Games and Manga, Aion: Making East Meet West, or like Juan Carlos Pinerio Escoriaza’s Second Skin documentary (discussing people with virtual lives), which I find particularly interesting. Overall his blog touches on the topics I want to explore and in particular, his “Virtual Worlds and MMORPGs: The Best and Worst of Humanity” discusses the virtual lives of people that I am really planning to look into (however my view might be a little more…gritty or just plain biased to a certain point). He really takes the time to research his topics and brings in a lot of first-hand sources; he does a lot of interviews with common players and even the designers of the games. John Funk seems to be on similar wavelength as me, as far as what gaming world topic that he discusses, and he could provide a very good researched base for my topics which I intend use and abuse, but he tends to take a very neutral side on every topic he discusses. Which could be exactly what is appropriate for his purpose or for that site, but I intend to take these topics down where the sun don’t shine. I want to get a more realistic view from players and I plan to be able to go to various forums and actually get direct responses from players. Unfortunately, my analysis might turn into rants due to the fact that Im mostly exploring douche baggery on the internetz, but, for me, I dont want sugar coatings on my posts, I want to keep it real, as they say. Because bitches on the internet shall receive no mercy, for if they taketh away I shall giveth back with a ban hammer. As a result, a lot of my style comes from some of the greatest bashers of all time. One of which, I bestow upon you, the great Yahtzee, basher of gonads and slayer of boobies. For some reason I have always found ranting to be quite amusing, especially ranting mixed in with witty comments. To top it off, a brit accent always comes in nicely and makes the rant an all-more epik pwnage. “Yahtzee” Crowshaw (Zero Punctuation) has always been my favorite ranter/video blogger due to the way he whips out insults and witty comments faster than a 12 yr old boy with porn whipping out his…oh oops. Now,Yahtzee doesn’t really talk about “important” things in the video game world, but does make very funny game review videos (mostly ranting about the shittyness of the game). He has a very nice stream of consciousness style, even though I believe most of his videos are rehearsed (or I would hope so) and he just tops as one of my favorite internet personalities (coming in second is psychedelicsnake from youtube). He takes on a very casual way of talking along with a little bit of dirty humor here and there that makes his conversations very free and, well, like a rant (prepare for the words gonads and cock to be thrown around a lot). Some of my favorite things he says are, Then a load of dofuses run around trying to stop an evil cult whose summoning a dark lord which ruins the touristy, but playing on the ps1, now looks like an ass made out of lego. The atmosphere is like a foot thick shiget (?) of whale blubber draped over your head He also is known for his narcissistic tone when he critiques video games. I make a policy of never reading other people’s reviews because it can taint my own recollation of the game and because im increasingly certain that im the only person on earth whose brain works properly. Sometimes its hard to catch everything he says (as shown in my second quote) since he talks at the speed of light, but this tends to add more to the comedy of his game reviews (at least for me). For a ranting game review, the crack head speed seems to add to the frustration he expresses in each of his v-blogs (most of his blogs are negative reviews of games since negativity, honestly, tends to be funnier). What really adds to his cheesecake though is that, with a v-blog you have the benefit of pictures. He has a very interesting way of putting his words into imagery and honestly you’d have to watch a video to see how it all works together (I highly suggest either Oblivion or Alone in the Dark). In many ways, with his v-blogs, he bridges text with video. In the video his images will either be pictures of what hes describing or simply words that add emphasis to what he just said (or just allows you to know what the hell he just said). Yahtzee is really a strong personality to me, he really is a genius at comedy and commentary. Every time I finish watching his videos, I can still hear his voice narrating everything I do (like a tiny british man living inside my brain saying ‘GONADS’ after I just ran into a pole). So, another long post for the win. And I leave you with great words from an even greater man. “Its time to kick ass and chew bubble gum…But Im all out of bubble gum.” posted by GOTOMonster @ 2:52 PM On Thursday, September 10, 2009 at 2:52 PM
